    Light rail to Randwick is happening!

    Randwick City Council has worked hard to bring light rail to Randwick. The State Government has given formal planning approval for the project to commence in mid 2015 and be completed in 2019 or 2020. (Read the Minister's media release 4 June 2014).

    Light rail will bring considerable benefits and create more than 500 construction jobs and support the growth of more than 4,000 jobs in education, health and research in Randwick City. Its construction will deliver a new, modern transport solution to service 42,000 UNSW students, 13,200 hospital and uni workers, 11,000 resident commuters, 7,000 TAFE students, 400,000 race-goers and millions more people who go to concerts, events and sporting matches at the sporting stadiums and Centennial Parklands.

    We welcome light rail, but it will have a big impact on Randwick City. Many parking spaces will be lost, particularly around Anzac Parade and Kingsford and it will result in traffic changes and disruption.

    To reduce the impact of light rail, Randwick Council released a light rail support plan on 17 April 2014 and this plan was endorsed by Council at its meeting on 29 April 2014.     Randwick City Council is calling for expressions of interest from residents and business representatives to be part of our Community Light Rail Support Plan Commitee to provide feedback on the implementation of Council's light rail support plan. To register your interest in becoming involved, please fill out the Expression of Interest form. Closing Date: 5pm, Tuesday 27 May 2014

        The State Infrastructure Strategy has called for the introduction of an underground Bus Rapid Transit system and two major interchanges to revolutionise the Sydney CBD among eight key recommendations for bus and light rail released today.

        The 20-year Strategy, prepared by Infrastructure NSW for the NSW Government, focuses on both the Sydney CBD and suburban areas where bus services are the only available public transport option and are being adversely affected by traffic conditions.

        Infrastructure NSW Chief Executive Paul Broad said addressing congestion in Sydney’s CBD was a major objective of the Strategy, which sought to put NSW in the best position possible for economic success.

        “We need to decongest our global city if we are to increase productivity and grow the economy. What the Sydney CBD needs is transformation through a mixture of operational reforms and capital investment in public transport,” Mr Broad said.

        Key bus and light rail recommendations include:

        • A CBD Transit Improvement Plan that involves construction of a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bypass tunnel for CBD bus services to take most peak buses off congested streets, delivering better travel times for passengers. It would also involve providing bus/rail underground interchanges at redeveloped Wynyard and Town Hall stations.
        • A $500 million extension of light rail from Central through the Moore Park precinct to the University of NSW.

          “The plan endorses a light-rail line down George Street in the CBD and to Randwick but Ms Berejiklian said a decision on whether to build it was pending.

          The plan scotches a proposed light-rail line along Broadway from Central Station to Sydney University and talks of a redesigned bus network that would require more peopie to change buses but offer more regular services.”

           Extract from a Daily Telegraph article:

          “A plan to build light rail to the SCG and University of NSW appears to be out of favour with little mention of the proposal in the draft transport plan.

          The only reference to the project is more study into the prospect of running a line through George St to the eastern suburbs….

          The plan simply spoke about planning work and a strategic plan and said: "Expansion of light rail services in Sydney will be subject to NSW government consideration"."

            The draft NSW Long Term Transport Master Plan (draft Master Plan) was released today by the Minister for Transport, Gladys Berejiklian and Minister for Roads and Ports, Duncan Gay.

            The draft Master Plan sets the direction for transport planning for the next 20 years, providing a framework for transport policy and investment decisions that respond to key challenges.

              The Sydney Morning Herald today reported that the NSW Minister for Transport announced options for bringing light rail to Randwick.

              The government is considering running trams from Central Station through Devonshire Street to Anzac Parade but is also looking at a tunnel between the station and Anzac Parade.

              The identified routes mark the first stage of the government's light rail feasibility study.

              Identified options

                    State Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian has welcomed last week's announcement of a pre-feasibility study to bring modern trams back to Anzac Parade in Sydney's east.

                    The pre-feasibility study is intended to give the NSW Government a head start in improving Sydney's transport and outline options to expand its light rail network.

                      ?????LIGHT rail will go beyond the University of NSW and travel to the heart of Randwick under a new proposal from Randwick Council.

                      Randwick mayor Murray Matson has revealed hopes for the mass transit system being considered by the State Government.

                      It will snake up High St, on to Belmore Rd and back to Anzac Pde via Alison Rd.

                      The new route being spruiked by the University of NSW and the Australian Turf Club, as well as council, will be examined in a $300,000 feasibility study, which will be submitted to the State Government for its final decision.

                        The Sydney Morning Herald today reported that a light rail line to Randwick would extend from Anzac Parade to The Spot in southern Randwick under a plan being promoted by Randwick Council, Sydney Turf Club and the University of NSW.
